The things you know or what you believe is true can sometimes spell disaster for your plumbing system. This is especially true when it comes to DIY plumbing repairs and maintenance. In most cases, these misconceptions cause more damage and extensive plumbing repairs.
If you like to tackle plumbing issues on your own, here are some of the facts you need to know:
Leaks (regardless of their size) are always a big deal.
If you ignore a leaky faucet, thinking that the damage is only minimal, then you run the risk of wasting gallons of water and having expensive water bills. Keep in mind that no matter how small the leak is, it can lead to significant damages if not fixed immediately. If you’re unsure how to handle the leak, Home Comfort Experts and other St. Joseph plumbing and heating experts suggest calling the pros.
Lemon peels can deodorize your garbage disposal but they can cause clogs.
While it is true that citrus peel can freshen up your garbage disposal, they can end up in the kitchen drain line and cause clogs. It is better to avoid this method, especially if you’re in doubt of how powerful your garbage disposal is. You can put some lemon juice to deodorize it, but be sure to do so sparingly since citric acid may corrode it parts. A far better solution is pouring some white vinegar.
A noisy water heater is not ALWAYS harmless.
It is normal for water heaters to make their own unique sounds. If the noises, however, are keeping you up at night, it is best to have it inspected. Rumbling noises indicate a collection of sediment or loose minerals in the tank. This can make the appliance less efficient, needing more power or gas to heat the water. You can use a cleaner to dissolve the sediment or call a plumber to have the unit repaired or replaced.
It is never okay to flush wet wipes (even flushable ones).
Regardless of what’s on the label, flushable wipes belong in the trash and not in your toilet. These products fail to disintegrate over time, which can clog and pile up the lines. The same is also true for products made to absorb water, such as paper towels and sanitary napkins. Keep in mind that there are only three things (3Ps) you can flush in the toilet – poo, pee, and (toilet) paper.
When dealing with plumbing problems that you know nothing about, it is best to call the professionals. This is to avoid the risk of causing more damage that can lead to extensive and costlier repairs.
